Hot-Rolled, Cold-Rolled and Coated Coil Supply

Hot-rolled steel

Hot-rolled strip serves welded tube production, formed sections and general fabrication. Its mill-scale surface affects the preparation needed before painting or plating. The ordered grade determines the strength and forming requirements; the rolling process alone does not identify them.

Cold-rolled steel

Cold-rolled strip provides a smoother uncoated surface for formed parts and subsequent finishing. Drawing-grade and full-hard coils have different forming behavior. For stamping or bending, the material line includes the grade and annealed or full-hard delivery condition rather than only a thickness.

Galvanized steel

A zinc-coated coil combines the steel substrate with a metallic surface coating. Roll-formed panels, profiles and fabricated parts need the appropriate substrate grade as well as the coating designation. Spangle appearance and oiling are specified alongside the intended downstream finish.

55% aluminum-zinc-coated steel

This is a separate metallic-coated family with its own steel grade and coating designation. It is used in formed cladding and other coated-sheet products. An aluminum-zinc coating is identified explicitly on the order; it is not substituted for a zinc coating based on a similar silver appearance.

Prepainted galvanized steel

The galvanized substrate, paint system and color make up one finished coil specification. PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF options are available for this range. The coating-side orientation matters when the strip feeds into a panel-forming line; the approved finish stays with the ordered material.

The millimeter columns define these family ranges; inch values are rounded conversions. Coated steel thickness must distinguish the base metal from the complete coated product.

Commercial, Drawing and Structural Grades

Commercial, drawing and structural grades have different material requirements. ASTM A1008 CS and DS identify cold-rolled steel types; DC01 and SPCC use their own standards. Full-hard strip also retains its specified hardness or temper.

Coating and painted-surface requirements

Steel thickness and gauge

A gauge number needs a product-specific thickness basis. The order uses an exact decimal thickness in millimeters or inches and its acceptance tolerance. For a coated coil, base-metal thickness and total coated thickness are identified separately so the steel entering the forming process matches the specification.

Metallic coating designation

Zinc and 55% aluminum-zinc coatings use different designations. The specified coating mass, surface treatment and test basis accompany the substrate grade; strip thickness does not determine the metallic coating requirement.

Paint film and approved color

A prepainted finish comprises the primer, exposed-face coating and reverse coating. The paint system, cured-film thickness, color and gloss define the finished surface. A physical sample establishes the agreed appearance.

Mandrel fit and outside diameter

The inside diameter must fit the uncoiler mandrel. Outside diameter is a separate limit: two coils of the same strip thickness and width can have different outside diameters because they contain different weights. The accepted delivery schedule carries the required ID, maximum OD and maximum individual-coil weight together.

Eye direction and winding face

Eye-to-sky and eye-horizontal packing require different receiving arrangements. Painted strip also has an outer and inner face, and that winding arrangement follows the forming line. Our packing scope identifies the required eye orientation and painted-face direction before the shipment is prepared.

Edges, joins and feed quality

Mill edges and trimmed or slit edges provide different feed boundaries. Edge burr, camber and any permitted strip welds or joins matter to a continuous forming or stamping run. These requirements form part of the agreed strip specification rather than being inferred from the parent-coil width.

Full-width coils and prepared strip

Full-width coil orders

Full-width coils retain their specified edges and surface. Bore, outside diameter and coil weight must fit the receiving line.

Slit and recoiled requests

Slitting changes the finished width and edge condition. The preparation detail covers width tolerance, burr, winding direction and the smaller coil’s handling limits.

Cut lengths for flat-sheet orders

Cut-to-length sheets add finished length, flatness and piece count to the strip dimensions. Their processing and flat-sheet packing are separate from full-coil supply.

Coil inspection and identification

Strip dimensions

Thickness, width and edge condition are checked against the ordered coil line. Where the order distinguishes base-metal and total coated thickness, the inspection requirement retains that distinction. A gauge label alone is not the dimensional acceptance record.

Material and coil identity

Each coil number links the delivered material and net weight to its steel specification and heat or production reference. Bare, metallic-coated and painted coils remain separately identified in mixed shipments.

Wound-coil condition

Receiving checks address damaged edges, telescoped wraps and the agreed bore and outside diameter. Camber and flatness requirements follow the applicable strip specification and processing scope. The inspection record separates wound-coil geometry from the flat condition required after uncoiling or leveling.

Coated and painted surfaces

Coated products retain their specified coating identity and surface treatment. Painted coils add approved color, face arrangement and film requirements. Visible scratches, edge damage and packing contact points are reviewed before dispatch against the agreed finish and packing scope.

Bulk pricing and export packing

Price and weight on the same basis

One metric tonne is 1,000 kg, approximately 2,204.62 lb; one US short ton is 2,000 lb. Our quote identifies the weight unit and whether pricing uses actual net weight or an agreed theoretical basis. Surface coating, strip preparation, packing and freight remain visible in the price scope.

Lots and production schedule

Production lots depend on coil family, grade, dimensions and finish. Minimum quantities and dispatch dates are confirmed for each lot, particularly when one order combines coated and uncoated steel.

Protected coils and receiving records

Coils are secured and packed to protect their edges, surfaces and bore. Metallic-coated and painted coils need protection from trapped moisture and abrasive packing contact. The packing list identifies each coil, its dimensions, net and gross weights and agreed orientation for unloading and receiving.

Steel coil purchasing questions

Can one order combine different coil families?

Yes. A bulk order can include separate hot-rolled, cold-rolled, metallic-coated and painted lines. Each retains its own grade, size, finish and minimum lot. The quotation identifies which lines share a shipment and how the coils are grouped on the packing list.

Can you quote a trial coil before a recurring order?

A trial-coil request is quoted against the required steel, strip dimensions and delivery geometry. The quotation states the trial quantity and its production or supply lot basis. The same specification can then identify the material for a repeat order.

Can coil labels include our item numbers?

Our packing scope can include the buyer’s item number alongside the coil identifier, steel specification, dimensions and net weight. The cross-reference stays on the packing list so receiving staff can match the delivered coil to the purchase-order line.

What if the order requires a specific producing mill or origin?

The quotation identifies the supplied material’s producer and country of origin against the purchasing requirement. A China-origin factory supply quote remains identified as China origin. A mill approval or domestic-origin requirement is resolved before the material line is accepted.
