ASTM A283 Steel Plate Supplier

Grade C and Grade D plate for drawing-defined structural and formed parts

We supply ASTM A283 Grade C and Grade D plate as rectangles or drawing-defined blanks. The grade suffix stays on each material line because the two grades have different strength and elongation requirements. Our structural catalog covers medium and thick plate; the offer pairs the selected grade and thickness with the parent-plate size, delivery condition and any cutting or forming work.

SSAB Grade C/D transverse-tensile reference data for 0.100–2.000 in. plate. Elongation minima decrease by two percentage points for plate wider than 24 in.; additional ASTM A6 adjustments can apply. This reference scope is separate from the 4–115 mm catalog program. The ordered thickness, unit system, governing specification and supplied material report establish delivered acceptance.

Grade suffix, unit system and material route

C and D describe different acceptance limits

The material record identifies the ordered grade and its complete chemistry, yield, tensile and elongation results. These criteria distinguish Grade C from Grade D where one measured tensile result falls within both ranges.

Keep ASTM and metric requirements together

A283/A283M treats inch-pound and SI systems independently. The specified unit basis and grade stay together on the order, using the governing values and tolerances for that system.

Coil becomes qualified plate after processing

Permitted coil-derived A283 plate receives the required finished-product processing, inspection, testing and reporting. Applicable additional ASTM A6 requirements are included in that route’s material acceptance.

A283 blanks for bending and subsequent fabrication

Compare elongation with the proposed bend detail

The reference Grade C elongation is higher than Grade D on the same gauge-length basis. A formed-piece review combines that material choice with thickness, rolling direction, edge condition and the proposed inside radius.

The blank retains its rolling direction

A formed-part drawing identifies the bend line relative to the plate rolling direction when required. The cut layout preserves that orientation instead of rotating a blank solely to improve nesting yield.

Delivered shape and bend acceptance

A flat-blank order identifies the delivered cut shape. When bending is included, the offer states the finished angle, inside radius, leg dimensions and acceptance stage. Finished legs, radius and bend allowance determine the required starting blank length.

Surface preparation after forming

Mill scale, cut edges and formed corners have different surface conditions. Requested blast preparation or coating identifies the faces and treatment stage, including the condition required after bending.

A283 plate for general fabrication orders

Formed covers and plate components

A drawing can combine a relatively simple structural material requirement with important bend and fit dimensions. The material suffix and finished outline remain visible when several thicknesses or shapes share one assembly schedule.

Mixed-grade fabrication schedules

A283 C/D parts, A36 connection plates and pressure-purpose plate have separate material lines. Each group retains its own grade, condition and preparation scope within a mixed fabrication schedule.

Check the A283 grade and the supplied part

Structural plate thickness inspection

Read the full grade result set

The material review connects the ordered grade with its chemistry and mechanical results. Yield, tensile range and elongation are checked on their stated test bases for the selected C or D material.

Use the specimen and width conditions

The two elongation columns refer to different gauge lengths. In the cited producer reference, a plate wider than 24 in. uses a two-percentage-point reduction; the report is read against the applicable specimen and specification conditions.

Check a formed part at its finished stage

For accepted bending work, the angle, radius and final legs are checked against the formed-piece drawing. Any required surface or bend examination is identified separately from the original plate material test.

Grade and thickness stay on each line

Our quotation identifies Grade C or D, supplied dimensions and piece quantity. Cutting, bending and required inspection have separate scope, allowing flat rectangles and finished formed parts to be compared by their actual supplied work.

Parent plate and finished yield

A nested blank order identifies the purchased material and resulting piece counts. Rolling-direction restrictions or a wider blank can change the usable layout; the quoted mass basis states whether it refers to parent material, net blanks or weighed steel.

Separate flat and formed pieces

Flat plates travel in supported thickness groups. Formed components need supports that protect their legs and corners; their packing count remains separate from unformed blanks and scrap allowances.

ASTM A283 Steel Plate purchasing questions

Does ASTM A283 still require a grade letter?

Yes. The current specification covers Grades C and D. Each order line states the selected suffix so its material acceptance follows the intended grade.

How do you present a Grade C or D alternative?

A proposed alternative is identified as a separate material offer for acceptance against the complete purchase specification. Grade C and D retain their different yield, tensile-range and elongation requirements.

How is the Grade C elongation reference used for formed parts?

The 25% value belongs to the stated tensile-test gauge length and reference conditions. Forming review also uses thickness, rolling direction, edge quality, inside radius and the accepted bend detail.

How does the 24 in. width condition affect the reference table?

For plate wider than 24 in., the cited SSAB reference reduces the elongation requirement by two percentage points. Its Grade C entries become 23% in 2 in. and 20% in 8 in.; Grade D becomes 21% and 18%. Additional applicable ASTM A6 adjustments must also be considered.

Which records qualify coil-derived A283 plate?

The finished plate needs its required processing, inspection, testing and reporting, including applicable additional ASTM A6 requirements. The record set links the starting material to that completed plate qualification.

Can one order include flat blanks and bent A283 parts?

Yes. Each drawing and grade has its own piece count. The flat blank dimensions, bend preparation and final formed dimensions are quoted as their actual supplied stages, with packing arranged for each shape.
