Combining beam and channel sizes

H sections, I beams and channels can share a delivery. Each profile keeps its own material grade and length, so a mixed order can serve one fabrication package.

Dimensions and unit mass are nominal section-table values. HE and IPE identify the profile geometry; the steel grade is a separate selection.

In C3 × 4.1, C identifies the channel series, 3 is nominal depth in inches and 4.1 is nominal pounds per foot. The MC prefix identifies a different channel series. Metric mass is converted from the US designation at 1 lb/ft = 1.48816 kg/m and rounded to two decimals.

Profile differences that affect fabrication

HE A and HE B are different sections

HE 200 A is 190 mm deep with a 10 mm flange; HE 200 B is 200 mm deep with a 15 mm flange. Their nominal masses are 42.3 and 61.3 kg/m. The letter changes the actual section, even when the nominal size is the same.

Metric and US-series alternatives

An IPE, IPN or US-series beam can have different flange width, web thickness and connection space. Compare the full geometry before changing the profile shown on the fabrication drawing.

Channels and hollow sections

C and MC are open channels with a web and two flanges on one side. Rectangular and square HSS have a closed cross section and different connection details. A material list that includes HSS can use our separate hollow-section range alongside these rolled members.

Steel grades and dimensional standards

A36 H sections

ASTM A36 is the carbon structural-steel specification in our H-section catalog. HE A, B and M describe geometry, independently of that material grade.

A572 I sections

Our I-beam catalog lists ASTM A572 Grades 42, 50 and 55. The selected grade and applicable thickness limits govern the material requirement; welding procedures follow that steel and the intended service.

Dimensional requirements

ASTM A6/A6M sets general requirements for rolled structural products; it is not a material grade. HE and IPE profiles use their metric dimensional series. Inspection applies the ordered standard and tolerance to the selected member rather than mixing rules from different series.

A992 and dual certification requests

A US drawing may call for ASTM A992 or certification to more than one material specification. Those requirements remain explicit in the inquiry and returned quotation. An A36 or A572 catalogue description alone does not establish A992 or dual certification for a supplied heat.

Cutting, preparation and protective finishes

Full lengths for workshop cutting

H and I sections are supplied in the published 6 m or 12 m formats. American channels use their stated lengths. Full-length supply leaves cut planning with the receiving workshop.

Prepared members for assembly

Cut lengths, miters, welded details and bends follow the piece drawings. Prepared members carry part marks for assembly; the machining or fabrication work is priced separately from the raw section.

Bare steel and primer

Bare hot-rolled sections retain mill scale. A primed order identifies the preparation and primer system, with any weld or connection areas that must remain clear. Primer selection follows the subsequent paint system and the fabrication sequence.

Hot-dip galvanized sections

Galvanized orders include the coating scope for the finished member. Fabricated details need access for cleaning, immersion and drainage; enclosed joints and attached plates can change that design. We review these details with the coating sequence before releasing the work.

Piece count, length and quotation weight

Nominal section mass

A 6 m HE 200 B length has a nominal steel mass of 367.8 kg: 6 m × 61.3 kg/m. Ten such lengths total 3,678 kg before coating and packaging. This calculation uses the published section mass, not a measured shipment weight.

Metric tonnes and US short tons

One metric tonne is 1,000 kg; one US short ton is 2,000 lb, or approximately 907.185 kg. The quantity unit appears beside the price basis. Quotes in tonnes therefore retain the piece count and member length needed to compare the same order.

Weight and processing charges

Our quotation identifies whether material is priced by nominal calculated mass, weighed mass or pieces. Cutting, fabrication and coating appear with their own scope. Packing-list weights separate the steel’s net weight from the packed gross weight.

Section and length inspection

Checks cover profile depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, length, straightness and the applicable shape tolerances.

Heat-linked material records

Material records identify the specification, grade and heat, with the required chemistry and mechanical results. Bundle and cut-piece marks link the delivered steel to those records.

Finish condition

Surface inspection checks visible damage, coating coverage and any connection or weld areas specified to remain clear.

Prepared member checks

Cut lengths and miters follow the piece schedule. Welded or bent members also receive the inspections specified for the completed fabrication.

Minimum order, packing and dispatch

Published H-section and channel terms

The published minimum for H sections and American channels is 5 metric tonnes. The listed dispatch period is 30–40 days after a 30% advance payment. Our quotation sets out the batch and dispatch schedule for each line, including I sections and processed pieces; ocean transit is a separate part of the delivery plan.

Size-separated bundles

Members are strapped in bundles by profile and length, with timber supports for handling. Open flange edges and finished surfaces receive the protection required by the packing scope. The piece count and bundle weight follow the actual section mix rather than a fixed number of members per bundle.

Receiving a mixed-section shipment

Bundle labels carry the project item mark, profile and piece count. Full lengths and fabricated members remain separately identifiable for receiving and workshop allocation.

Steel section purchasing questions

Can an inch-based material list be used for the quote?

Yes. We keep the requested US section code and length units. A 20 ft finished length is 6.096 m, so it cannot be cut from a 6 m length. Proposed metric alternatives are shown separately.

Does the price include structural design or erection?

The product price covers steel and the named preparation work. Structural design and erection are separate services; fabrication follows the approved drawings.

Can beams, channels and HSS arrive in one shipment?

Yes. A mixed order can combine rolled members with separately specified hollow sections. Bundles identify the profile and material so the receiving team can allocate each item to the job.
