PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF paint options

Paint Resins for the Exposure

A sheltered interior cover and a sun-exposed wall panel need different paint properties. Polyester offers a broad range of formulations; SMP and HDP address more demanding weathering requirements. PVDF is a fluoropolymer option for color-critical architectural surfaces. The actual coating formulation determines the required performance.

Paint Performance During Forming

A harder finish can resist handling damage yet need a different bend allowance from a more flexible coating. Tight folds, embossed shapes and deep profiles belong in the paint selection. The steel, zinc layer, primer and finish are assessed together for the intended forming operation.

PE — polyesterGeneral sheet fabrication, interior parts and exterior products using an appropriate formulationFormability, hardness and the required exposure class
SMP — silicone-modified polyesterRoofing and wall panels needing a weathering-focused polyester systemColor and gloss retention, abrasion resistance and bend requirements
HDP — high-durability polyesterExposed panels using a higher-weathering polyester formulationThe specified paint product and its exposure and forming requirements
PVDF — fluoropolymerArchitectural panels where long-term color and UV resistance drive selectionResin formulation, color, film schedule and required performance criteria

HDP identifies a high-durability polyester family, rather than one universal paint grade. A PVDF description alone does not establish a resin percentage, licensed paint brand or architectural approval.

One color can cover different steel

Two coils can have the same painted face and different base-metal strength, zinc mass or forming properties. A roofing profile needs the steel grade and thickness required by its design; a drawn cover needs suitable ductility. We keep the substrate specification and the finished coating system together on the quote, with alternatives identified as separate offers.

Color, gloss and the reverse-side finish

Coated-Metal Color Samples

A RAL number identifies a color target. Screen images do not define the final shade, gloss or texture. A physical coated-metal reference carries those appearance choices into the order, especially when flashing and panels will be seen together.

Color Consistency Across Adjoining Panels

Panels from separate paint lots can show visible shade or gloss differences. A coordinated coil schedule keeps the paint product, approved color reference and exposed-face orientation together. For repeat orders, the reference and acceptance limits remain part of the specification.

Reverse Coating for Visible Surfaces

A standard backer protects the concealed face; it is not automatically the same decorative finish as the top. Open-sided parts and assemblies with both faces visible need a separately specified reverse color and finish. The two faces have their own film requirements.

Thickness, forming and coil fit

Base-Steel Thickness

Base-metal thickness excludes both the zinc and organic paint layers. Metal-coated thickness includes the zinc; finished painted thickness includes the paint as well. The ordered decimal thickness, measurement basis and tolerance must match the tooling and part design. Paint-film thickness cannot make up missing base steel.

Painted Surfaces Through Forming

Clean, aligned rolls and suitable bend geometry reduce scratching and paint damage. A bend-adhesion requirement identifies the method, bend severity and acceptance criteria for the actual coated material. There is no single bend rating that applies to every paint and steel combination.

Coil Geometry and Feed Orientation

Coil inside diameter, maximum outside diameter and individual weight follow the uncoiler’s limits. Painted-face orientation and winding direction control which side enters the forming line as the visible surface. Requested slit widths also need defined burr, camber and width tolerances.

Painted coil for panels and fabricated parts

Roofing and wall cladding

Roll-formed building panels need a substrate and paint system suited to outdoor exposure, the panel profile and the visible color. Cut edges, drilled holes and fastening details remain part of the finished system’s design. Coil coating does not turn an unsuitable substrate into a universal roof material.

Appliance covers and cabinets

Cabinet faces and appliance covers need coating requirements for the specified cleaners, stain exposure and handling abrasion, alongside the approved appearance. Pressed recesses and folded edges are included in the finished-part surface acceptance. The paint system is selected for those conditions rather than an outdoor-panel rating.

Flashing and folded trim

Narrow formed trims often combine tight bends with an exposed painted face. Steel formability and paint adhesion matter at folded corners; matching the panel’s color reference and gloss keeps the surrounding trim visually consistent.

Paint-film, appearance and bend checks

Face and reverse paint film

Paint-film acceptance distinguishes the primer, finish coat and total system on each side. The agreed method must separate organic paint from the metallic zinc layer. A combined coating reading cannot by itself establish the individual paint-layer thicknesses.

Color and surface appearance

The approved metal reference and agreed color/gloss criteria control appearance acceptance. Surface inspection addresses scratches, roll marks and defects on the specified visible face. The order’s appearance limits determine which marks are acceptable for the finished use.

Adhesion after bending

Forming-sensitive material needs a defined bend test and coating-adhesion criterion. Bend direction, specimen condition and test temperature affect the result. A stated test method without a required result does not define acceptance.

Records for the delivered coil

Shipment documents identify the steel substrate, zinc coating, paint system and required inspection results. Coil and required paint-lot records accompany the delivered material.

Bulk pricing and painted-coil packing

Bulk Prices by Substrate and Paint System

PPGI prices identify the steel and zinc specification, paint system, face and reverse film requirements, strip size and net-weight unit. Color, preparation, packing and freight are itemized with the production terms.

Surface and Edge Protection

Painted coils need protection where straps, covers and supports contact the finish. The packing specification covers the eye, exposed edges, outer wrap and securing method. Required coil identification and color-lot references are listed in the order’s marking schedule for receiving and panel allocation.

Dry Packing and Storage

Moisture trapped between painted wraps can damage adhesion or cause corrosion beneath the coating. Dry covered storage and controlled condensation matter before the coil reaches the forming line. Wet wrapping is addressed promptly on receipt; paint is not a substitute for dry handling.

Prepainted coil purchasing questions

Is PPGI the same product as PPGL?

No. PPGI uses a galvanized zinc-coated steel substrate; PPGL uses aluminum-zinc-coated steel. This page’s dimensional program is PPGI. A PPGL requirement has a separate substrate and finished coating specification rather than inheriting the PPGI ranges.

Can a new coil match panels that are already installed?

An original paint or RAL code is a starting point, but weathered panels can differ from their original color. A current physical sample and agreed color/gloss criteria provide a better matching basis. New metal and aged panels are not automatically an exact visual match.

Do salt-spray hours establish an outdoor service life?

No. Accelerated exposure tests compare defined specimens under a stated method and evaluation criterion. Test hours do not convert directly into years outdoors. Any required paint warranty has its own product, location, exposure and written terms.

Is removable protective film included in a coil order?

Protective film is a separate preparation request with its own quoted scope. Film choice depends on compatibility with the painted face, the forming sequence and storage exposure. The accepted film specification states its removal conditions; temporary film is not a permanent outdoor finish.
