Millimeter dimensions are the catalog basis. We quote the steel grade, zinc designation and thickness-width combination together, with the thickness measurement basis and tolerances. Coil outside diameter and individual weight follow the receiving equipment.

G30, G60 and G90 zinc coating weights

Zinc Coating for the Specified Exposure

Zinc coating weight controls the amount of protective zinc, while the steel grade controls strength and formability. The specified exposure, forming operation and subsequent finish determine the coating requirement. A heavier coating also changes cost and forming behavior.

G and Z Coating Designations

G-series orders use oz/ft² and ASTM A653; Z-series orders use g/m² and ASTM A653M. We retain the requested designation and unit system on the material line. Similar nominal coating levels are not an automatic substitution between specifications.

Values are coating reference minima for the original full-width sheet, not measured results for a shipment. Single-spot and per-side requirements also apply under the specified standard. Total-both-sides values do not require equal coating on each face; the accepted order retains its applicable test basis.

Commercial, Forming and Structural Grades

For bent or drawn parts, select the grade and delivered forming properties for the operation. Full-hard material has limited ductility; its hardness and bend requirements remain explicit on the order. Structural grades follow the member’s strength requirement. We quote ASTM, EN and JIS under their own specifications, and list any proposed alternative separately.

Spangle, skin passing and surface treatment

Regular and minimized spangle

Regular spangle shows visible zinc crystals; minimized and zero-spangle descriptions address the surface appearance. Spangle size does not identify coating weight. For visible components, the agreed finish and appearance criteria define the face supplied.

Skin-passed surface

Skin passing changes the surface texture and can improve flatness and resistance to stretcher-strain marks. The order defines the required skin-pass condition and finish; an exposed panel also needs its own surface-quality acceptance.

Passivation, oil and painting

Passivation and oil are separate treatment choices. They support storage protection or subsequent processing, but the paint or adhesive system determines the compatible treatment and cleaning route. Painting orders identify the pretreatment requirements; oiled material includes the required degreasing step.

Coated thickness and coil preparation

Base metal or finished thickness

Base-metal thickness measures the steel substrate; total coated thickness includes zinc on both faces. A decimal thickness and tolerance with the stated measurement basis gives the tooling and receiving team the same requirement. Gauge names alone leave that basis unresolved.

Slit edges and cut-length requests

Slitting exposes the cut steel edge and introduces edge, burr and camber requirements. We price requested slit widths or cut lengths as a separate preparation scope. A narrow slit strip uses the applicable coating acceptance for that product, rather than an assumed full-width triple-spot result.

Coil weight and winding

The inside diameter, maximum outside diameter, individual coil weight and winding direction determine line compatibility. Eye orientation and any exposed-face requirement follow the unloading and feed arrangement. These limits are carried through the accepted coil schedule.

Galvanized coil for roll forming and fabrication

Purlins, framing and decking feedstock

Structural roll-formed members start with the designed steel grade and thickness, then the specified zinc coating. Profile geometry, bend radii and member design govern the material choice. We quote the coil input; finished-member approval belongs to the fabricated product.

Bent panels and enclosures

Folded cabinets, ventilation components and similar sheet-metal parts need material that tolerates the bends. The commercial or forming designation follows the part severity. For visible panels, handling and tooling must also preserve the agreed surface face.

Drawn and pressed parts

A drawn shape needs the selected forming grade, thickness and lubrication condition to work together. The production trial assesses the actual part and tooling, including coating adhesion around the strained areas. The approved requirement then controls the production order.

Steel thickness and dimensions

Dimensional checks use the agreed base-metal or coated-thickness basis. Width, edge condition and coil geometry are recorded against the accepted supply line, including any finished slit-width tolerance.

Zinc coating acceptance

Coating records identify the designation, unit and test method. The applicable full-width, single-spot and per-side criteria determine acceptance. A handheld thickness reading is not automatically the standard coating-weight result.

Adhesion and surface condition

The agreed inspection scope covers coating continuity, surface defects and applicable adhesion or bend requirements. Forming-sensitive orders retain the relevant test requirements alongside the steel grade.

Coil and material records

Coil identification links the delivered strip to its grade, zinc coating and inspection reports. The required mechanical, coating and dimensional records are included in the shipment documents.

Galvanized coil pricing and export packing

Material and zinc in the price basis

GI prices are quoted by net tonnage for the specified steel grade, zinc designation and finish. Slitting, cut lengths, packing and freight are itemized, with lot quantities and production terms for each material line.

Protected coils for shipment

The agreed packing scope covers dry barrier protection, side and eye guards, strapping and a suitable shipping saddle. Gross weight includes the packing; net weight identifies the delivered steel. Coil numbers and individual weights appear on the packing list.

Dry handling on arrival

Moisture trapped between tightly wound galvanized layers can cause white storage stain. Keep coils dry and ventilated, inspect packing on receipt and deal with wet wrapping promptly. Condensation control matters when cold coils enter a warmer building; protective treatment does not replace dry storage.

Galvanized coil purchasing questions

Is galvanized coil the same as galvannealed coil?

No. Galvanized coil has a zinc coating; galvannealed coil is processed to form a zinc-iron alloy coating. The coating designation and forming behavior differ. We keep a galvannealed request as a separate product requirement rather than replacing it with GI.

Can galvanized strip be welded?

Yes, with a welding procedure suitable for the zinc-coated steel and the joint. Zinc affects welding conditions and creates fumes that require proper controls. The fabrication plan includes the relevant procedure and treatment of coating damaged around the weld.

How are cut edges and drilled holes protected?

Slitting, cutting and drilling expose steel at the edge of the zinc-coated sheet. The final component specification determines whether additional edge or local coating repair is required for its exposure. Include that fabrication requirement when choosing the material and protection system.

Does galvanized coil come with a painted color finish?

Our GI range has a metallic zinc surface. A factory-applied color finish requires a prepainted coil order with its paint system, color and film requirements. Bare GI supplied for a customer painting line instead carries the agreed surface-treatment condition.

Does G90 mean 90 microns of zinc on each face?

G90 is an ASTM coating-mass designation in oz/ft² on a total-both-sides basis. It is not a 90 µm thickness per face; the ordered standard also sets the applicable sampling and acceptance requirements.

Can I order minimized spangle and a forming grade together?

The steel grade, spangle and surface treatment are separate selections on the GI line. We review the requested combination with strip dimensions and forming requirements before quoting the material.
