Forged Steel NPT Fittings

A105 elbows, tees, couplings and closures quoted to specification

A105 forged-steel NPT fittings cover elbows, tees, couplings, reducers and closures specified for threaded pipework. This is a specification-based sourcing service: we quote the requested pattern, end sizes and class as a complete item. The table below is a Class 3000 dimensional reference.

Change directionFemale elbows join two male pipe ends; street elbows provide one male and one female end.
Add a branchEqual tees keep the same opening size; reducing tees use separate run and branch sizes.
Join straight pipeFull couplings join two male ends. Half couplings serve the separate connection detail specified for their shorter body.
Reduce a connectionReducing couplings have two female ends; bushings use a male outer thread and a smaller female inner thread.
Close an openingCaps close male pipe ends; plugs close female ports.

Center-to-end measures from the intersecting pipe centerlines to the fitting end. Coupling length measures the complete body. Millimeter values convert the inch center-to-end dimensions using 25.4 mm per inch.

One-inch fittings have different lengths

The 1 in. Class 3000 elbow and equal tee have a 1 1/2 in. center-to-end dimension. A 1 in. full coupling is 2 3/8 in. long. Thread engagement determines how far the mating pipe enters each opening, so the component dimension and installed run length are different measurements.

Tapered thread engagement

The tapered male and female threads engage along their flanks. Thread sealant and assembly requirements follow the connection and service specification. A pipe thread is selected by its nominal designation, rather than by treating a caliper bore measurement as the size.

Clearance for tightening

An elbow or tee needs room to turn during assembly. Where both pipe ends are already fixed, a union or a revised assembly sequence provides the separation point. The fitting pattern and available wrench clearance belong in that layout decision.

NPT and NPTF designations

NPTF has different crest and root controls for dryseal connections. An NPT description is not an NPTF specification; the required thread designation stays explicit on the purchase line.

Elbows, Tees, Couplings and Closures

Female elbows and street elbows

A regular threaded elbow has two female ports. A street elbow has one male and one female port, which changes the connection at one end. The 45° or 90° angle and both end types identify the part.

Equal and reducing tees

An equal tee uses the same size at all three openings. Reducing tees identify the run and branch separately. When all three ports differ, the opening sequence is run × run × branch; it is retained in the fitting description.

Full and half couplings

A full coupling joins two male-threaded ends through a straight body. A half coupling has one threaded socket and a shorter body. Those patterns serve different assembly details and are counted as separate items.

Reducing couplings and bushings

A reducing coupling has female connections of two sizes. A reducing bushing has an external male thread and a smaller internal female thread. Both reduce size, but their end configurations fit different mating parts.

Caps and plugs

A female-threaded cap closes a male pipe end. A male-threaded plug closes a female port. The wrench form and connection size identify the correct closure for the opening.

Crosses for opposing branches

A threaded cross has four ports arranged as two intersecting straight axes. It serves a layout with two opposing branches; a three-port tee leaves one of those directions closed. The opening count remains explicit on the fitting list.

Material and dimensional standards

ASTM A105 carbon steel

ASTM A105 specifies the forged carbon-steel material. Fitting dimensions and class come from the applicable fitting specification; the NPT thread has its own dimensional standard.

ASME B16.11 forged fittings

ASME B16.11 covers forged threaded and socket-weld fitting dimensions, tolerances, ratings and marking. Its threaded class series is 2000, 3000 and 6000. Socket-weld Class 9000 belongs to a different connection series.

ASME B1.20.1 pipe threads

NPT dimensions and gauge checks follow ASME B1.20.1, alongside the fitting’s specified material and class.

Thread, bore and dimensional checks

Thread gauge fit

Checks cover the specified thread form, taper and gauge engagement. Damaged starts, burrs or incomplete threads are addressed before the fitting is packed.

Pattern and layout dimensions

The fitting angle, center-to-end dimension and overall body length are checked against the selected pattern. Reducing fittings retain the size of each port in the inspection item.

Bore and finished edges

The flow passage and opening edges are checked for obstructions and machining burrs. Clean threaded mouths let the matching part start without forcing the first thread.

Material identity and marking

Checks reconcile the material, nominal size and class with the item marking and package label.

Wholesale piece counts and protected threads

Piece Counts by Pattern, Size and Class

Mixed orders are packed and counted by fitting pattern and size. Reducing parts show each port size; male/female ends distinguish street elbows from female elbows.

Protected Threads and Package Identification

Packing separates fitting sizes and protects the threaded mouths from impacts and loose debris. Carton or wooden-package identification shows the item description and piece count for receiving.

Threaded fitting purchasing questions

Does Class 3000 mean a constant 3,000 psi working pressure?

No. A fitting class is a rating designation. Allowable pressure depends on the material, temperature and applicable piping design requirements. The class on the fitting line must match the approved project specification.

Are forged steel fittings the same as Class 150 black iron fittings?

No. Malleable-iron threaded fittings use a different material and the ASME B16.3 class series. The Class 3000 dimensions shown here belong to forged steel fittings; a matching NPT size alone does not make the two products equivalent.

Can a fitting quotation include unions?

List unions separately by material, size, class and seat design. A forged union specified to MSS SP-83 is a separate item from a B16.11 coupling or elbow and is identified separately in the quotation.

Can the shipment include threaded steel pipe?

Yes. Threaded pipe lengths can be quoted with the fitting pieces. The pipe material, wall designation and length remain on their own lines, with the mating NPT connections identified for the assembly.
