Member profiles, plate thicknesses, cuts, holes and joint preparation come from the released fabrication documents. Structural design, foundation work and site erection have separate responsibilities; our quotation identifies the manufactured steel and hardware included in the purchase.

Assembly dimensions and connection fit

One reference for the finished assembly

Connection faces, hole centers and overall dimensions use one common reference on the assembly drawing. The mating parts use the same origin, with diagonal and angle checks locating the attached plates. Correct cut lengths alone do not establish that a finished frame will fit the next assembly.

Clearances at angled and offset joints

An angled member needs its end cut, attachment face and hole pattern shown in the same orientation. Offset plates also need space for the bolt head, nut and installation tool. The assembly detail establishes these clearances along with the permitted variation in squareness and mating dimensions.

Individual-member tolerances do not define every dimension of a welded frame or paired assembly. The fabrication specification sets the acceptance criteria for the whole unit, including any tighter interface requirements that affect fit.

Member materials and structural connection holes

Sections, hollow members and plate

Our structural material range includes hot-rolled beams, channels and angles, hollow sections and plate. A36 and A572 material families are available for the specified member or plate form. The drawing's exact grade, section designation and thickness remain on the material list; a hollow member retains its own tube specification.

Round holes and directional slots

Standard round holes and short slots produce different joint details. A slot has both a width and a length, plus a direction relative to the connected member. The approved connection drawing determines the hole type, bolt assembly and washer arrangement, including any required approval for slotted or enlarged holes.

These selected RCSC Table 3.1 values apply to high-strength structural bolt connections. Foundation anchor holes, equipment holes and the assembly's dimensional tolerances follow their own details. A changed hole size or slot direction is recorded as a connection change before fabrication.

Paint and galvanizing around the assembly details

Painted members and reserved faces

A painted assembly can contain surfaces with different preparation requirements. The finish schedule identifies the exposed steel, joint contact faces and areas reserved for field welding. Slip-critical joints use their specified contact-surface treatment; the frame's general paint color alone does not establish that treatment.

Galvanized hollow assemblies

Hot-dip galvanized frames need access for the treatment liquids and molten zinc to enter and drain. Vent and drain openings are coordinated with the hollow members and welded closures before fabrication. The final detail also keeps the connection faces and bolt access usable after coating.

Cutting, fit-up and drawing revisions

Parts prepared for their mating joints

Cut ends, drilled plates and member openings are prepared to the part details before assembly. Left- and right-hand parts carry distinct marks when their orientation differs. That distinction matters at angled joints, where two plates with the same outside size can have different holes or attachment faces.

Fit-up before the assembly is welded

Member positions, diagonals and connection faces are established during fit-up. The welding sequence and intermediate checks follow the fabrication plan for that assembly. Features that become difficult to reach after a joint is closed are checked while they remain accessible.

A released revision for each part

We fabricate from the approved revision assigned to the order. A changed hole pattern, end plate or member length updates the affected part and assembly records. For a partial change, the release list identifies which pieces use the new detail and which retain the earlier approved configuration.

Bespoke project sets and repeat assembly orders

A mixed set for one project

A bespoke structure often combines standard sections with unique joint plates and short fabricated assemblies. The purchasing schedule groups these items under the assembly they complete, while retaining each loose part's mark and quantity. This lets a contractor buy the fabrication set without treating every component as a separate sourcing job.

Repeat units with defined variants

A repeat order may contain several versions of one frame: a different end connection, brace orientation or attachment position. Each variant has its own drawing reference and quantity. The production list separates identical units from changed versions so the repeat purchase reproduces the intended configuration.

Steel added to an existing structure

An extension or replacement assembly uses the existing structure's measured connection positions and the approved new details. The interface drawing identifies the steel that stays in place and the new components joining it. The fabricated package follows that interface and its site assembly sequence.

Assembly checks and fabrication records

Critical dimensions against the datum

The dimensional record identifies the assembly reference and the features checked from it. Overall length, diagonals, connection-face position and mating-hole centers are recorded against their drawing requirements. Each result belongs to the corresponding assembly or part mark.

Welds against the joint schedule

Weld size, joint preparation and examination scope follow the specified welding requirements. Where AWS D1.1 is adopted for the order, it provides the structural-steel welding framework for procedures, qualifications and acceptance. The required weld records are identified in the assembly's inspection plan.

Material linked to the fabrication set

Material records follow the assembly bill of materials, linking the specified grades to the included members and plates. Required traceability is retained for the parts covered by the order.

Finish and final configuration

The release check covers the required finish, reserved connection faces and completeness of the assembly. Loose plates and hardware are reconciled with its parts list. Final records carry the released drawing revision, keeping the inspected configuration identifiable at dispatch.

Custom fabrication pricing and shipping units

Preparation and repeat-unit pricing

Custom assemblies are priced by material, cutting, holes, welding, finish and required documents. Setup or first-unit work is listed separately from repeat units; changed variants keep their own quantities and operations.

Assembled or split for transport

A welded unit's packed envelope can be much larger than its material volume. Shipping size, handling weight and unloading access determine whether it travels as a complete assembly or approved smaller pieces. Split units retain the designed field joints and the connection parts needed to put them together.

Marked parts for the receiving team

The packing register lists assembly and loose-part marks, drawing revisions and quantities. Variant parts remain separate, with protected supports and the matching plates and hardware grouped for receiving.

Custom steel fabrication purchasing questions

Can you quote from a general arrangement drawing?

Yes. A general arrangement with assembly quantities can start a budget quote. The offer identifies the detail available and the fabrication scope priced. Approved part, joint and interface details establish the final production release.

What happens when the drawing and bill of materials show different quantities?

We identify the conflicting quantities in the quotation review and flag them for agreement. The accepted drawing revision and quantity schedule define the price and production release, so an unresolved document difference does not become an extra or missing fabricated piece.

Can the steel be supplied for our own erection contractor?

Yes. The supply can cover fabricated assemblies, prepared members and listed connection hardware. The quotation defines the shipping units and field connections included for your erection contractor.

Can I change a drawing after ordering?

A change is reviewed against the work already released. The affected part list, material, fabrication and finish are identified before a revised price or schedule is agreed. Production then follows the accepted change record for those pieces.
