MC Steel Channel Supplier

Miscellaneous channels selected by complete designation, flange projection and web thickness

We supply hot-rolled MC miscellaneous channels for fabrication and structural material schedules. Each line keeps the complete designation, grade, length and piece count. Same-depth MC variants have different flange widths and web thicknesses; the replacement order matches those section dimensions to the actual connection.

Nucor-Yamato nominal MC identification references, March 2024 table, PDF page 49. The offer confirms the requested designation and grade within our advertised MC family. Supplied dimensional tolerances and structural requirements follow the accepted specification. Average flange thickness identifies the reference section; a mating detail uses the actual tapered-face and root geometry.

MC designation, flange shape and material grade

Read depth and nominal mass together

In MC12×35, 12 identifies the nominal depth series and 35 the nominal pounds per foot. The flange dimensions come from that complete section designation, while the selected steel grade provides its material requirements.

Use the selected MC flange profile

Inner-flange slope varies among the MC shapes in the producer reference. The selected MC profile supplies the flange and root geometry used by its mating detail; C and parallel-flange UPE sections keep their own profiles.

A6 geometry and the steel grade

ASTM A6 supplies general rolled-section requirements; the specified material grade supplies its own chemistry and mechanical criteria. Our channel order states both the complete section and the actual material grade.

Check the surfaces that an MC channel actually meets

Outside-back and inside-web datums

A plate fixed against the flat outside web uses a different datum from an insert seated against the inside web. The 0.465 in. web-thickness difference between the two MC12 end references shifts that inner face without changing their 12 in. depth.

Flange projection around a mating part

The same-depth MC12 reference set changes overall flange width from 3.670 to 4.135 in. A fixture or bracket extending around the flange is checked against the projection of the selected designation.

Inside root and fastening access

The MC12 reference rows list T as 9.475 in. and k as 1.263 in. These section-table references locate the root region. The connection drawing uses the actual rolled fillet and required clearance to check the specific bolt, socket or inserted plate envelope.

Facing direction on a cut member

An asymmetric channel has an open side and a flat back. A prepared-member drawing identifies the datum face, open-side direction and connection-feature positions so each supplied piece reaches fabrication in its intended orientation.

MC sections for replacement members and fabricated frames

Replacing a named MC member

The retained designation and mating dimensions guide a replacement order. If only the nominal depth is known, flange width and web thickness help distinguish likely sections before the material line is accepted.

Frames with inserts or cross plates

An insert or cross plate fitted between the flanges needs the selected section’s inside profile, root region and orientation. A wider or heavier MC alternative can change that fit even where its strength appears suitable.

Channel web and flange measurement

Identify the complete MC section

Section checks include depth, flange width and web thickness. The full designation remains linked to the material record and packing group, keeping same-depth weight variants identifiable.

Rolled roots and tapered faces

Fillet radius, rolled variation and inner-face shape affect close-fitting parts. A nominal table supports identification; the accepted drawing and tolerance basis govern the required connection fit.

Orientation and prepared features

The open side, cut faces and any specified hole or attachment pattern are checked from the drawing datum. Required coatings retain their own finished-fit allowance around the mating surfaces.

Price by complete section and length

Nominal 20 ft lengths of MC12×31 and MC12×50 represent 620 and 1,000 lb of theoretical steel respectively. That 380 lb difference follows the published lb/ft designations; it excludes actual mass variation, coatings, preparation and packing.

Keep same-depth variants in separate groups

MC12 weight variants retain their own bundle identities. Packing lists show the full designation, supplied length and piece count for each group.

Protect the mating flange edges

Support and separators keep flange projections and cut ends away from damaging strap contact. Any prepared attachment parts are counted separately from the straight channel lengths.

MC Steel Channels purchasing questions

What does MC mean in a steel channel designation?

MC identifies miscellaneous channels in the American structural-shape designation system. The following numbers identify the nominal depth series and nominal weight per foot; the material grade is specified separately.

How is an alternative same-depth MC section checked?

The proposed section is identified separately for acceptance of its flange width, web, mass, section properties and connection fit. The approved designation then remains on the order and prepared-member drawing.

Is the tabulated flange thickness constant across its inside face?

For a tapered-flange shape, the listed value is an average flange-thickness reference. The thickness near a rolled root and flange edge differs; a close-fitting or bolted attachment uses the actual profile and connection detail.

Which dimensions define a channel’s inside fit?

The selected flange faces, root fillets and rolled tolerances define the usable inside region. The mating drawing states the MC designation, insertion orientation and required clearance.

What is the basis of the 20 ft weight comparison?

It multiplies each nominal lb/ft designation by the same 20 ft example length. The actual offer separately states supplied lengths, weighed or theoretical quantity basis, coating and packing.

Can one shipment contain several MC weight variants?

Yes. Each full designation and length has its own piece count and packing group. Same-depth variants stay distinct so receiving and fabrication can allocate the correct channels to each member mark.
