C and MC Profile Designations

C6 × 8.2 is a 6 in. nominal-depth, 8.2 lb/ft profile. C6 × 10.5 is a heavier section with different web and flange dimensions; the complete designation identifies the required profile.

The flange values are nominal section-table thicknesses; a tapered flange has a varying thickness across its width. C and MC use separate profile designations, even at the same nominal depth.

Both JIS 150 × 75 profiles have the same outside depth and width. Their web and flange thicknesses identify the 18.6 and 24.0 kg/m variants. Nominal weights describe the uncoated steel section; the order retains the applicable dimensional tolerance and weight basis.

Flange shape and connection fit

UPN or UPE at the same depth

UPN has tapered inner flange faces; UPE has parallel flange faces. At 200 mm depth, UPN 200 has a 75 mm flange width and weighs 25.3 kg/m, while UPE 200 has an 80 mm flange width and weighs 22.8 kg/m. The bolt pattern and mating part must fit the selected profile.

Bolt seats and rolled corners

The inner slope of a tapered flange affects the bearing surface beneath a bolt head or nut. A connection calling for beveled washers needs the matching seat and orientation. The web-to-flange fillet also occupies space inside the channel, so plate edges and tool access need clearance from the rolled corner.

Which way the channel opens

The flat web back provides an outside attachment face; the open side provides access between the flanges. Left and right members can share the same cut length while requiring opposite orientations. An end view on the part drawing establishes the open side and the attachment face.

Material grades and order records

ASTM material requirements

C and MC describe profile geometry. The material grade and certificate requirements are selected separately. ASTM A6/A6M gives general requirements for structural shapes; it is not a steel grade.

EN and JIS material identity

UPN/UPE and JIS channels use their specified material and quality designation alongside the dimensional standard. EN 10365 and JIS G3192 describe profile geometry, independently of the material grade.

Heat records and additional tests

A material record links the channel to its heat and specified chemical and mechanical properties. Orders requiring impact testing identify the temperature and acceptance requirement. After cutting, piece marks retain the link to the original material record and the ordered grade.

Cut channels and prepared members

Square-cut channel pieces

Our channel service includes saw and flame cutting. A cut-piece line states the finished length, piece count and end condition. The channel profile remains complete at each end, with cut-edge preparation matched to the subsequent welding or assembly operation.

Left and right mitered parts

An angled channel cut produces different lengths at the web and flange edges. The part drawing identifies the length datum, cut angle and open-side direction. Paired frame members retain separate left and right marks so their ends meet in the intended orientation.

Holes and attached details

Holes, slots and welded attachments are quoted from the part drawing. Face and end datums set the positions, with web-root clearance retained on the approved revision.

Back-to-back channel members

Back-to-back channels need defined spacing and connections. Spacers, stitch plates or welds follow the assembly drawing, with coating applied at the specified stage.

Bare, painted and galvanized channels

Bare steel for fabrication

Bare channels retain their hot-rolled surface and mill scale. Cut edges expose fresh steel. Welding and final paint preparation therefore follow the fabrication sequence, with the areas to be cleaned or reserved for later work identified in the order.

Painted channel orders

A painted order names the surface preparation and coating system. Open flange faces, web backs and cut ends are included in the stated coating scope. Connection or weld areas reserved from painting stay marked on the prepared-piece drawing.

Galvanized channels and assemblies

Single open channels provide access to both the web and flange surfaces. Back-to-back webs and attached plates create overlapping areas that need venting and drainage provisions before hot-dip galvanizing. The assembly detail and finish sequence address those gaps before coating.

Channel geometry and flange fit

Profile checks cover depth, flange width, web and flange thickness. The selected taper or parallel flange form stays part of the acceptance check. The two JIS 150 × 75 variants, for instance, require different thickness measurements despite matching outside dimensions.

Straightness and twist

A straight web edge alone does not establish the alignment of both flanges along a channel. Sweep, camber and twist are assessed over the member against the ordered tolerance. This matters when a channel back mounts to a straight base or paired channels form an assembly.

Prepared-piece orientation

Finished lengths, angles and hole positions are checked from the drawing datums. Left and right marks remain on reversed members through packing, even when their cut lengths match.

Finish and bundle identity

Bare, painted and galvanized channels are kept identifiable by profile and finish. Checks cover visible coating damage, exposed edges and piece counts. Bundle marks tie the packed channels to the material reference and the line items on the packing list.

Bulk orders and export packing

Minimum order and dispatch

Our channel listings set a 5 metric-tonne minimum and shipment in 30–40 days after a 30% advance payment. The accepted quote states the batch requirement and dispatch schedule for the selected sizes and preparation. Ocean or inland transit has its own shipping schedule.

Quantity and price basis

Channel orders are itemized by complete profile, grade, finished length and piece count. A 6 m UPN 200 length has a nominal steel mass of 151.8 kg before coating, using 25.3 kg/m. The quotation identifies theoretical or actual weight as the billing basis and separates preparation, finish and freight.

Packing full lengths and cuts

Full lengths are supported and banded in profile-separated bundles. Cut pieces retain their part marks and counts, with surface protection at contact points for finished channels. The packing list states the piece totals, net steel weight and packed gross weight for receiving and unloading.

Steel channel purchasing questions

Can C, MC and metric channels be supplied in one shipment?

Yes. We review a mixed channel schedule as one bulk order, with each profile, material grade and length identified separately. The quotation gives the batch requirement for the requested mix, followed by the preparation and shipment scope.

Is this the same product as lipped C purlin or slotted strut?

These are hot-rolled structural channels with a solid web and two open flanges. Lipped sheet-steel purlins and slotted strut use different profiles, dimensional systems and connection hardware. A purlin or strut designation stays separate from a rolled C or MC order.

Can UPN replace a C channel with a similar depth?

A replacement must match the approved member and connection requirements. Depth, flange width, web thickness, flange form and material grade are compared together. We identify a proposed alternative separately; it replaces the scheduled profile only after acceptance.

What load can a channel carry?

Channel capacity is calculated for the selected material, span, load direction, connections and lateral restraint. The tables identify profile geometry and nominal weight. Structural calculations establish the required member; we quote the channel and preparation shown on the approved schedule.
