Beam Profiles and Material Grades

HE 140 A, B and M are quoted as separate profiles. Each beam line includes the complete section designation, material grade, finished length and quantity; JIS-series dimensions also retain their specified material grade.

Values identify nominal profile geometry and steel mass before coating. IPN flange thickness is the section-table value for a tapered flange. The JIS 200 × 100 selection shown here has a 198 mm depth and 99 mm flange width; the complete dimensional variant stays on the order.

Flange geometry and connection fit

Wide flanges and heavier sections

HE sections provide broad flange faces. Within the 140 series, the A, B and M profiles increase from 24.7 to 33.7 and 63.2 kg/m, while their depths also change. Choosing the heavier profile therefore changes the connection geometry as well as material weight.

Parallel and tapered flange faces

HE and IPE have parallel flange faces. IPN has tapered inner faces, which affect bolt-bearing surfaces and the fit of clamps or trolley hardware. Connection hardware must match the selected flange shape, width and thickness.

Clearance at the web roots

The rolled fillet occupies space where the web meets each flange. End plates, stiffeners and bolt locations need clearance from that curve, plus room for the installation tool. The connection drawing establishes this fit using the full section profile.

The inch-pound and SI values are the specification’s separate unit-system values. They are material references, not measured heat results or beam load capacities. Product thickness and the ordered standard govern the applicable material requirements.

A588 weathering I beams

Our I-beam range includes ASTM A588 Grade A for projects specifying atmospheric-corrosion-resistant structural steel. The material designation remains A588 whether the project calls for an exposed surface or a coating system.

Traceable steel properties

The material record identifies the specification, grade and heat, with the required chemical and mechanical results. Piece and bundle identification carries that link into prepared members. A higher-strength grade changes the material requirement; it does not change the beam’s section dimensions.

Specified toughness and welding

An order requiring impact toughness includes the test temperature and acceptance requirement. A572 welding procedures follow the selected grade and intended service. These requirements are stated with the member schedule before material and fabrication are released.

Beam cutting and prepared members

Straight cuts and edge condition

Our beam service includes saw and flame cutting. Saw-cut pieces suit a schedule requiring a defined finished length and square end. Flame-cut edges carry the preparation needed for the subsequent weld or fit-up; the cutting allowance is separate from the final member length.

Mitered member lengths

Mitered beams are cut to the drawing’s long-point, short-point or datum length. Member orientation and part marks distinguish paired pieces before assembly.

Welded beam details

Welded plates and attached members follow the accepted fabrication detail. Plate position, beam orientation and weld requirements belong to that drawing. We separate this prepared-member scope from the price of a straight rolled length.

Connection preparation

Holes, copes and plate clearances use the connection drawing’s dimensions and tolerances. Any such work appears explicitly in the returned quotation, with the drawing revision. The prepared-piece schedule distinguishes these details from plain cut stock.

Primer, galvanizing and weathering steel

Bare or primed beams

Bare hot-rolled beams retain mill scale. Primer orders identify the surface preparation and paint system, including the areas reserved for welding or specified connection surfaces. The coating sequence follows the fabrication and subsequent finish plan.

Galvanized prepared members

Hot-dip galvanizing covers the member defined in the order. Attached plates and enclosed details need access for cleaning, immersion and drainage. Vent and drain provisions are addressed in the fabrication detail before the assembly enters the coating process.

Exposed weathering steel

An exposed A588 member relies on a suitable atmospheric exposure and wet-dry cycling to develop its protective surface. Details that retain water or debris change that exposure. Beam ends, plate joints and drainage receive attention in the project’s weathering-steel design.

Beam inspection before dispatch

Profile and straightness

Beam checks cover depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, together with flange squareness. Sweep and camber are assessed along the member against the ordered tolerance. End-profile dimensions alone do not establish the straightness of a full length.

Material and member marks

Cut-piece marks retain the beam’s heat reference. Attached plates carry their own material identity, with the prepared member recorded against the fabrication drawing revision.

Finished ends and miters

Cut length, end squareness or specified angle are checked against the piece drawing. The length datum and member orientation remain visible in the inspection record. Cut edges are checked for the condition required by the next fabrication operation.

Coating and packing release

Coated members are checked for the specified coating extent and visible handling damage. Beam marks, piece counts and the finished-member schedule are reconciled before bundling. The packing list separates steel net weight from packed gross weight.

Wholesale quantities, packing and dispatch

Minimum quantity and dispatch

Our H-beam and ASTM I-beam listings set a 5 metric-tonne minimum and a 30–40 day dispatch period after a 30% advance payment. The accepted quote sets out the batch and dispatch schedule for the selected profiles and processing. Freight transit is scheduled separately.

An itemized bulk quotation

Beam lines identify the profile, grade, finished length and piece count, with the agreed weight basis. One metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Cutting, welded detail work, finish and shipment charges retain their own scope, so price comparisons cover the same prepared material.

Long-member handling

Beam bundles use spaced supports and straps suited to their lengths and cross sections. Coated flange edges receive protection at band contact points. Full lengths and prepared pieces are identified separately for loading, with project marks carried onto the packing list.

Steel beam purchasing questions

Can you review a US W or S beam schedule?

Yes. We review the exact W or S designation and material grade requested on your schedule. These requests are separate from the metric catalogue selections shown here. A proposed profile alternative includes its dimensions and requires acceptance before it replaces the scheduled member.

How can I identify a beam without its section mark?

Provide the overall depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, plus a clear end-profile photo. Those measurements help identify the profile. The material grade is established from the material record rather than appearance.

Is ASTM A992 or dual certification included?

A992 and any dual-certification requirement must be named on the order. The returned quote identifies the material certification scope for the supplied product. An A36 or A572 description alone does not establish A992 certification.

Does the order include load calculations or erection?

Our beam quote covers the material and processing stated in the accepted order. Structural calculations, connection design and erection are separate project services. Member preparation follows the approved drawings for that order.

Can full lengths and cut beam pieces be ordered together?

Yes. Full lengths and prepared pieces are listed separately by profile, grade and quantity. Cut pieces include finished lengths and part marks, with miter or connection details priced from the drawing.
