Fabricated support steel for integrated solar roofs and façades

BIPV roof and façade supports position the selected panel or glazing system against the building frame. We fabricate secondary steel, bearers and stand-off brackets with the seating faces, fixing centers and clearances required by the coordinated envelope details.

Support steel in our BIPV supply scope

Secondary frames and stand-off brackets place the envelope system on its required support plane. Bearers and prepared seats connect the selected glazing or panel profiles to that steel.

Our scope is the support steel and specified connection hardware. The envelope provider supplies the selected PV glazing or modules, specialist profiles, seals, fire barriers and electrical parts.

Roof and façade support geometry

Roof slope, façade alignment, bracket offset and fixing centers establish the support faces. Perimeter and opening details locate the shorter members and returns that complete the main support grid.

Integrated roof support lines

Roof bearers follow the mounting lines and slope of the selected panel system. Their end and transition details connect the envelope supports to the building frame.

Façade planes and stand-offs

Stand-off brackets set the distance between the building and façade backing frame. Corner, edge and intermediate brackets can have different offsets and fixing access.

Support faces around openings

Window edges, roof perimeters and changes in façade direction often interrupt the main grid. Return members and end plates provide the required support faces at those interruptions.

Glazing seats and module-system connections

The panel frame or glazing profile determines the steel bearing and retention interface. Glazing seats, framed-panel fixings and pressure-profile connections therefore use different support details.

Glazing seats and isolating contact

The envelope detail identifies the glazing seat, setting or isolating contact and supported glass edge. Steel bearing faces are prepared to accept that arrangement. The support does not replace the specified gasket or introduce direct glass-to-steel contact where the selected system requires isolation.

Framed panel connections

A framed BIPV unit uses its designated profile or fixing interface. The support drawing locates the mating steel holes and seating faces, with fastener access around the frame. Ordinary top-mounted PV clamps are included only when they are part of the selected assembly’s actual retention detail.

Pressure profiles and captured glazing

Pressure bars, caps and gaskets belong to the selected glazing system. Their connection line, contact surfaces and clearance requirements define the adjoining steel preparation. Steel holes and seating faces follow the retention, glass bite and sealing geometry shown in that assembly detail.

Steel and aluminum interfaces

Connections to aluminum profiles include the specified fixing and contact treatment. Isolating pieces, where required, remain part of that joint detail.

Support joints and envelope movement

The coordinated joint detail identifies what is fixed, what is permitted to move and which supplier’s parts provide that movement. Steel splices and brackets preserve those roles through fabrication and assembly.

Fixed and moving support positions

A fixed support locates the selected assembly; a moving support retains the movement allowed in its detail. Hole or slot direction, bearing faces and hardware follow that connection design. An installation-adjustment slot is not automatically a thermal-movement provision.

Building and envelope joint lines

Building movement joints, steel splices and panel-system joints are identified separately. The layout shows where a support stops, changes connection or crosses a joint under the accepted design. Closing a gap or joining two support pieces on site must retain the intended restraint and seal arrangement.

Fabrication and assembly sequence

Cutting, drilling and shop assembly prepare the support steel for installation. Part marks distinguish handed brackets and offsets, while the assembly sequence keeps fixing faces accessible before panels or covers conceal them.

Drainage, service access and steel finish

Water routes and support penetrations

Drainage paths, cavity openings and weep slots remain clear around the supports. Where a bracket crosses the weather layer, its position and fixing face follow the selected flashing or seal detail. The support arrangement preserves access to these weather interfaces.

Rear connections and maintenance space

Junction boxes, cable connections and removable covers need usable space behind the integrated panel. The bracket offset and neighboring members preserve that service route. Connection faces remain reachable in the installed arrangement, including the path needed to remove the specified profile or panel.

Finish around the mating faces

Paint or batch galvanizing follows the steel finish schedule, including visible areas and the faces meeting specialist profiles. The detailing accounts for coating at holes, bearing surfaces and mating parts. Hollow or enclosed fabricated pieces retain the specified preparation for their selected finish.

The table compares ASTM A123 material categories at a measured 0.50 in. steel thickness. The order uses each component’s actual category and thickness; aluminum profiles and separate hardware retain their own finish specifications.

Steel packages for integrated roofs and façades

Integrated solar roof packages

Roof packages combine the repeated bearers with perimeter and transition steel. Separate roof zones can use different supports where slopes, panel formats or weather details change.

Façade backing and bracket packages

Façade packages include the backing grid, stand-offs, corner returns and opening-edge supports. Grouping them by elevation helps the envelope contractor receive a complete set for each installation area.

Support fit and system-specific records

Support planes and bracket dimensions

Inspection checks support planes, offsets, fixing centers and member geometry. Mating faces are checked before glazing profiles or panel assemblies conceal them.

Steel and finish records

Material records identify the support steel. Finish checks apply the correct requirements to structural shapes, plate brackets and tubing, including specified treatment at joint contacts.

Envelope records for the application

The required document list separates support-steel acceptance from the selected module and envelope assembly records. UL 7103 addresses steep-slope BIPV roof coverings; its scope excludes BIPV wall assemblies, skylights and roof windows. Façade or other glazing-system requirements are matched to their actual application, not inferred from a roof-covering reference.

Connection and loose-part counts

Handed brackets, mounting plates and loose fasteners are checked against the assembly quantities.

Packing support steel by installation area

Steelwork and connection hardware

Frames, bearers, brackets and steel fasteners are priced for the defined support package. The offer identifies finish, inspection, packing and freight, alongside any mating parts supplied by the envelope provider.

Packing by elevation or roof zone

Frames and bearers are grouped by roof zone or elevation. Loose plates and brackets carry the same assembly references; separators protect the faces that must fit the glazing profiles.

BIPV support purchasing questions

Can you quote before the envelope details are complete?

A roof plan or façade elevation can support a budget estimate using stated support dimensions. Fabrication needs the selected panel/profile connections and coordinated steel geometry.

Can we check a first-fit connection?

Yes. A bracket or short support assembly can be quoted for trial fitting with the envelope provider’s profile or panel mock-up.

Can support frames be split for restricted access?

Where the connection design allows it, frames can be delivered in separate sections with their joining parts. Delivery dimensions must fit the unloading and installation route.

Can one façade use different bracket offsets?

Yes. Each offset and handed variant follows its own detail and location on the elevation. The package can include repeated main-grid brackets and shorter runs for corners or openings.
