3LPE Coated Pipe Manufacturer

Epoxy, adhesive and polyethylene applied as one external pipe-coating system

We supply steel pipe with an external three-layer polyethylene system for buried and submerged pipeline orders. The FBE primer bonds to prepared steel, the adhesive joins the layers and the polyethylene jacket provides the outer barrier. Our supply scope ties that coating build to the pipe schedule, weld cutbacks and field-joint interface.

Coated outside diameter for support planning

Coating adds to the steel diameter on both sides. This calculation shows the dimensional effect of a specified 3.0 mm total radial build when arranging cradles, clearances and protective packing.

Calculated geometry: coated OD = bare OD + 2 × total radial coating thickness. The 3.0 mm input is a stated calculation basis, not a universal 3LPE minimum or a factory size range. Allow for specified tolerances and support padding in the actual handling detail.

Specify the coating standard separately from the pipe

External polyolefin coating scope

ISO 21809-1 covers plant-applied three-layer polyethylene and polypropylene coatings for its defined pipeline service. A 3LPE order identifies the polyethylene system and the adopted requirements, including each material and thickness requirement.

Steel grade and coating class

The pipe retains its own material and manufacturing requirements. Coating selection then addresses the installation exposure and operating conditions. Neither a thicker jacket nor a different coating name changes the steel pipe's pressure-design basis.

Compatible materials and qualification

The primer, adhesive and PE grade form a specified material combination. Procedure qualification and the inspection plan address that combination, including the required adhesion, continuity and mechanical checks. Substituting one material changes more than its color.

Layer interfaces and pipe-end preparation

A prepared surface beneath the primer

Surface contamination and sharp steel defects can compromise the layer bonded directly to the pipe. Preparation and application conditions follow the selected procedure before the adhesive and polyethylene conceal that surface.

An intact jacket over the weld seam

The external steel weld profile remains part of the coating geometry. Layer coverage and inspection include that profile and the pipe ends, where local thickness or adhesion can differ from the open barrel.

Cutbacks matched to the joint treatment

The bare steel length provides room for welding and examination. The coating edge and overlap zone must also suit the selected field-joint system. Those details are established together, giving site work a defined coating termination.

Long pipeline runs

A single order can coordinate steel dimensions and coating requirements across repeated lengths. Pipe identity remains traceable after coating, with the size, grade and item references carried into the shipment records.

Transitions and installation interfaces

Road crossings, supports, bends and field joints can expose the coating to different handling or contact conditions. The project coating plan identifies any additional protection or different detail at those locations, separate from the straight-pipe jacket.

Acceptance checks across the complete coating build

Material and process identity

Coating records identify the primer, adhesive and polyethylene batches and the required process checks. Those records distinguish a specified three-layer system from an unidentified black external jacket.

Film build, adhesion and continuity

The inspection plan assigns the thickness locations and the required adhesion and holiday tests. A total-thickness result and a continuity result answer different acceptance questions; neither replaces the specified layer-bond checks.

Damage and qualified repair

Cuts, exposed lower layers, disbonding and damaged coating edges are assessed against the repair procedure. Repairs have defined material, preparation and repeat-inspection requirements.

Padded supports and restraints

Cradles and restraints contact the coating through suitable protective surfaces. Separators prevent pipe-to-pipe rubbing, while the support arrangement keeps the coated barrel clear of dragging and sharp contact during loading.

Storage and end preservation

The coating manufacturer's storage conditions govern exposure and stacking. Bare cutbacks receive temporary protection compatible with later joining. The receiving check covers jacket condition, coating edges and the exposed steel ends before installation.

One clearly itemized supply scope

Our quotation separates the steel pipe, three-layer coating and any additional joint materials or special packing. Actual length, coated diameter and shipment quantities provide the loading basis; the destination and delivery terms complete the offer.

3LPE pipe purchasing questions

Are 3PE and 3LPE different coating systems?

Both names commonly refer to three-layer polyethylene: an epoxy primer, adhesive and PE outer layer. The order still identifies the actual material system and adopted specification so the abbreviation is not the only product definition.

Can DIN 30670 be substituted for ISO 21809-1 on the order?

A standard substitution needs a documented review of the specified edition, scope and acceptance requirements. Similar coating descriptions do not establish that every material, thickness or test requirement is the same.

How do I convert a coating thickness from mils to millimeters?

One mil is 0.001 in., equal to 0.0254 mm. A specified 100 mil thickness therefore equals 2.54 mm. Keep the original acceptance tolerance and distinguish total thickness from an individual layer thickness.

Can the coated ends be grooved or threaded after delivery?

That work changes the steel end and can damage or remove the coating. The fabrication and joint design must define the end preparation, coating termination and any repair before it becomes an approved supply arrangement.

Does 3LPE-coated pipe include field-joint application?

The plant-coated pipe, joint materials and site application are separate items in the supply scope. Our offer identifies any included joint materials; a pipe coating description alone does not include site labor or completed field-joint inspection.

Is a black PE jacket automatically suitable for unlimited outdoor storage?

No. Storage duration and exposure follow the selected coating material and project requirements. Black color alone does not establish UV qualification, allowable stacking conditions or an unlimited storage period.

Quote your 3LPE-coated pipe schedule

Include the steel grade, OD, wall, lengths and quantities with the coating specification, total and layer-build requirements, cutback detail and destination. We price the pipe, coating and included shipment items against that schedule.
