The catalog uses millimeter dimensions. Each Al-Zn quotation pairs the specified coating designation with the grade, thickness-width combination and surface treatment. The coil schedule also identifies the thickness measurement basis and tolerances.

AZ50, AZ55 and AZ60 coating weights

Coating class and steel strength

An AZ designation identifies the aluminum-zinc coating mass. It does not set the steel’s yield strength or its forming properties. A panel order needs both the specified coating class and the steel grade suited to the designed profile.

ASTM and metric orders

AZ50, AZ55 and AZ60 use the ASTM inch-pound system; AZM150, AZM165 and AZM180 use its SI system. Retain the full designation on the purchase line. EN and JIS also use AZ names, so an AZ number without the governing standard leaves the coating requirement ambiguous.

Substrate Grades for Forming and Profiling

A structural profile starts with its required strength and base-steel thickness. A tight bend or drawn shape also needs suitable ductility and coating adhesion. Full-hard material has restricted formability; it is not a substitute for a specified forming grade. We retain the chosen ASTM, EN or JIS identity and list any proposed alternative separately.

Metallic finish and surface treatment

Silver metallic appearance

The aluminum-zinc coating gives the sheet a silver crystalline surface. Skin-pass and matt conditions refine the delivered finish. For visible trim or panels, the order’s surface criteria cover appearance as well as marks that would remain after forming.

Oil, passivation and anti-fingerprint

Our GL catalog includes oil, passivation and anti-fingerprint treatment. Each is a defined surface condition, not a paint color or an automatic clear-acrylic coating. The selected treatment must suit the forming lubricant, adhesive or subsequent coating process.

Feedstock for a painting line

A painting line needs a metallic substrate with compatible treatment and preparation. Oil removal and pretreatment belong to that process. Factory color-painted Al-Zn material is a separate PPGL requirement with its own paint system; a bare metallic coil order does not include it.

Thickness basis, slit widths and coil fit

Base steel versus coated thickness

Base-metal thickness excludes the Al-Zn layer; total coated thickness includes it. The order states the decimal dimension, tolerance and measurement basis used by the tooling or panel design. Coating mass cannot be used to make up a shortfall in specified base-steel thickness.

Slitting and exposed edges

Requested slit widths carry their own width, burr and camber limits. Cutting exposes the steel at the edge; adjacent zinc in the alloy contributes local protection, while the component’s thickness and exposure determine further edge treatment. Loose cutting debris is removed to protect the visible metallic face.

Fit to the receiving line

Coil inside diameter, maximum outside diameter and individual weight follow the uncoiler and handling limits. Winding direction and the visible-face orientation matter when feeding exposed panels. The accepted coil schedule carries these requirements through to packing and coil identification.

Aluminum-zinc coil for roofing and fabrication

Roof and wall panel feedstock

Roll-formed panels need the profile’s specified base-steel grade, thickness and AZ coating. Bend radii and tooling must preserve the coating through forming. We quote the input coil; panel span, connections and weather-tightness follow the finished building-product design.

Flashing, trim and folded parts

Narrow slit material for flashing and trim needs clean edges and a consistent exposed face. Tight folds make the forming condition especially important. The part’s bend geometry sets the material and surface acceptance rather than a coating designation alone.

Appliance and fabricated sheet parts

Drawn housings, pressed covers and folded components need material selected for their geometry. Bend severity and any stretched areas determine the forming properties and adhesion checks. Part acceptance includes the coating’s condition at those strained areas, rather than relying on a general commercial-grade description.

Coating, dimensions and forming checks

Thickness and strip dimensions

Receiving dimensions are checked on the stated base-metal or coated-thickness basis. Width, edge condition and any slit-width tolerance follow the accepted line item. Coil geometry is checked against the feed and handling requirements.

Alloy coating identification

The coating record names the Al-Zn family, designation, unit system and measurement method. Applicable triple-spot and single-spot criteria control coating acceptance. A surface-gauge reading alone does not establish every requirement of the material standard.

Bend response and surface

Forming-sensitive orders retain the agreed bend or coating-adhesion checks alongside the steel properties. Surface acceptance addresses scratches, abrasion and coating defects that affect the intended exposed face or subsequent finish.

Coil Numbers and Material Records

Individual coil numbers connect the steel, Al-Zn coating and inspection documents to the packing list. Required records are quoted with the selected material and surface condition.

Bulk Prices by Steel Grade and AZ Coating

Eye, edge and surface protection

Our packing quotation defines dry barrier protection, side and eye guards, strapping and the shipping cradle. Metallic surfaces destined to remain visible need protection against moisture and rubbing. The packing-list requirements include coil identities and individual net/gross weights.

Keep moisture out of wound layers

Coils are stored under cover, clear of standing water and with condensation controlled. Wet wrapping is dealt with promptly on receipt. A protective treatment does not replace dry handling; trapped moisture can mark the tightly wound Al-Zn surfaces before the coil reaches the forming line.

Galvalume coil purchasing questions

Does AZM mean the coating contains magnesium?

No. AZM is used for the SI coating-mass designations in ASTM A792M. It does not identify magnesium content. This page covers traditional aluminum-zinc-silicon coating; a magnesium-modified coating is a separate material requirement.

Is Al-Zn steel suitable for wet concrete or livestock confinement?

Wet-concrete contact, strong alkaline exposure and livestock-confinement conditions are unsuitable applications for ordinary Al-Zn coated sheet. General agricultural roofing is a different exposure. Copper, lead and copper-treated timber, including runoff from incompatible materials, also affect material selection. Severe marine or chemical conditions require a protection system selected for that environment.

Does AZ55 include a roof-system warranty?

AZ55 defines the coating requirement for the coil. It does not specify a roof assembly, installation or warranty period. The finished panel system has its own product requirements and warranty terms; ordering a coating class does not establish them.

Do dark marks on a coil always mean corrosion?

No. Dark marks can have different causes, including surface abrasion or wet-storage oxidation. Record the coil identity, packing condition and affected area when receiving the material. The agreed appearance and material acceptance criteria determine the disposition; color alone is not a complete diagnosis.

Can AZ-coated coil use the same specification as galvanized coil?

The coating families use different product specifications and designations. Al-Zn and zinc coating requirements remain separate on the order, even when the strip dimensions and silver appearance are similar.

Can aluminum-zinc coil be supplied as prepainted material?

Prepainted Al-Zn steel has its own substrate, metallic coating and paint-system specification. A PPGL request is reviewed separately from bare Al-Zn coil and from the galvanized-substrate PPGI range.
