Steel Column Base Plate Manufacturer

Cut, drilled and welded base assemblies matched to the anchor layout

We fabricate steel column base plates as loose drilled parts or column-attached assemblies. The released base detail coordinates plate size and thickness, anchor-hole positions, column orientation and any specified stiffeners or shear lug. Our quotation keeps those fabrication details, finish conditions and required records with the identified column-base reference.

AISC Manual 15th-edition Table 14-2 reference as reproduced in Engineering Journal, second quarter 2024. Circular or square washers meeting the size recommendation are acceptable. Washer clearance includes column, weld and rod-position interference. The adopted project base detail selects actual holes and washers, including smaller holes where appropriate.

Anchor holes, washer bearing and the base connection

Anchor-rod holes follow the base detail

Anchor rods connect the column base to its foundation interface. The released design selects the hole dimensions and anchor arrangement, while fabrication retains those positions and sizes on the base drawing.

Plate washers need clear bearing space

The washer covers the selected hole and bears beneath the nut. Its footprint is coordinated with the column, welds and adjacent stiffeners, including the actual rod position within the clearance hole.

Material and base-assembly records

The plate, column and welded attachments retain their specified materials and acceptance requirements. Required material and fabrication records link those components to the supplied base reference.

Plate cutting, holes and column attachments

A defined plate outline and thickness

The released plan dimensions, corner treatment and plate thickness establish the cut part. Hole positions remain referenced to the selected column and anchor datums through the required cutting and drilling operations.

Loose plates or column-attached bases

A loose plate retains its own mark and orientation references. A column-attached assembly also identifies the column position, weld preparation and attachment details needed to preserve the same base geometry.

Grout access and shear-lug details

Grout openings, vents, leveling provisions and shear lugs are fabricated where the released base detail includes them. Their location and required clearances remain coordinated with the bearing face and anchor group.

Base plates for new columns and surveyed replacements

Column-base packages for structural fabrication

The building or support schedule identifies each column base and its anchor interface. Repeated bases can share fabrication groups while retaining their plate thickness, hole pattern and orientation references.

Replacement plates on an existing anchor group

A survey establishes actual anchor locations, projection and available bearing geometry. The accepted replacement detail resolves those dimensions into the plate, hole and washer arrangement to be fabricated.

Base geometry, bearing faces and attachment checks

Anchor pattern and column position

Measurements check hole centers, diameters and orientation against the released datum. Column and attachment positions are related to the same reference on an assembled base.

Bearing-face and weld condition

The selected face condition and required weld acceptance are checked against the fabrication specification. Reserved bearing or connection surfaces retain their stated preparation and finish requirements.

Component identity and release documents

Plate marks and drawing revisions connect the finished part to its material and inspection records. Loose washers, lugs or other supplied parts retain their separate identities and counts.

Base assemblies and protected bearing surfaces

A quotation for the released base detail

Our offer identifies loose plates or attached assemblies, their preparation and finish. Included plate washers or other loose parts have their own material references and quantities.

Supports beneath finished parts

Packing supports the plate or assembled column at the agreed contact points. Protection keeps bearing faces, prepared holes and projecting attachments clear of concentrated packing loads.

Receiving by column-base reference

Packing marks retain the base reference and orientation needed for the installation schedule. The receiving list separates repeated plates, attached columns and separately packed connection parts.

Column base-plate purchasing questions

Can a base plate be priced from its overall size alone?

Overall size and thickness establish the raw plate scope. A fabrication offer also includes the specified material, holes, column or stiffener attachments, bearing-face condition, finish and quantity from the released base detail.

Can the holes be smaller than the table’s recommended maximum?

Yes, where the project detail selects a smaller hole for its anchor layout and installation tolerance. The table gives recommended maxima; the released base and anchor drawings identify the actual fabricated dimensions.

What determines whether the base plate needs a machined face?

The structural and fabrication specification identifies the required bearing-face condition and any machining. That preparation is retained as a defined operation on the base-plate or column-assembly line.

Can anchor rods be included with the plate order?

Requested anchor rods are itemized separately with their specification, diameter, length, thread and hardware. Their interface remains coordinated with the released base drawing and anchor schedule.

When should a grout hole be included in the base plate?

AISC’s base-plate FAQ suggests considering a grout hole when the plate’s smaller side exceeds approximately 24 in. Very large or long rectangular plates may need two openings. The grout-placement plan establishes the selected openings and their positions on the fabrication drawing.

Which hole and edge-distance details apply to foundation anchor rods?

The base-and-foundation detail specifies anchor-rod holes, edge positions, washer seating and erection tolerances. AISC Chapter J and RCSC bolting provisions address steel-to-steel joints; the foundation anchor arrangement follows its own anchorage criteria. We fabricate the plate to the released base detail.
