Factory FBE coating, with 3LPE and 3LPP to project specification
Our published FBE selection covers nominal ½–10 in. steel pipe with 300 or 400 µm films. Contractors and distributors can order pipe, coating and prepared ends together. 3LPE, 3LPP and internal epoxy are separate project-coating requests, priced from the specified system and pipe schedule.
Order external protection, internal coating or both with the steel pipe. Each surface retains its specified coating product, cured thickness and acceptance requirements.
Coated Pipe for Buried Lines
External FBE forms a bonded barrier on steel; multilayer systems add a polyethylene or polypropylene outer layer. For buried lines, soil, pipe temperature, backfill and the corrosion-control design determine the specified system. Installation protection is detailed below.
Buried transmission · Gathering lines · Pipeline distribution
Epoxy on the Inside of the Pipe
Internal liquid epoxy and FBE are available for specified orders. Gas-flow coating and a corrosion lining have different duties; the product, cured thickness and application method follow the conveyed fluid and exposure conditions.

One mil is 0.001 in. (25.4 µm), not one millimeter. Film options are catalog values; the specified minimum and acceptance tolerance belong in the coating requirement. Converted feet and mils are rounded.
Weld Cutbacks and Installation Protection
We coordinate pipe ends and coating termination with the weld and field-joint detail, including the specified cutback and overlap area.
Weld cutbacks leave the specified bare-steel area for joining and inspection. Length, edge taper and overlap follow the selected sleeve or field-applied joint coating.
End preparation
Plain or beveled steel ends to the joining detail
Cutback dimensions
Length and tolerance measured from the pipe end to the coating termination
Field-joint scope
Compatible joint material and overlap detail; field application identified separately
Outer Protection for Abrasive Installation
An abrasion-resistant overlay protects the underlying corrosion coating during demanding handling or pull-through installation. We quote this additional layer when it is part of the installation specification. Its thickness and performance requirements remain separate from the primary FBE barrier.
Pull-through sections
Overlay system selected for the specified crossing and installation conditions
Coating transitions
Mainline, overlay and field-joint edges coordinated before application
Repair materials
Compatible repair method with damage limits and reinspection requirements
Coating Thickness and Continuity Checks
Inspection covers steel preparation, cured coating and repairs against the specified system. The agreed reports follow those acceptance requirements.
Dry Film Thickness
A calibrated gauge checks cured thickness at the specified locations and minimum limits. Multilayer inspection identifies individual-layer requirements separately from total coating thickness.
Holiday Detection
Holiday testing checks coating continuity using the method and voltage specified for the coating material and thickness. Repaired areas receive the required repeat checks before release.
Steel Surface Before Coating
Cleaning and abrasive preparation establish the required surface condition and profile. Dust and preparation-to-coating timing are checked against the application procedure.
Application and Cure
FBE powder is applied to heated steel and cured to the material procedure. Temperature and cure records belong to that specific powder system; a different formulation can require a different application window.
System Qualification
Adhesion, impact or cathodic-disbondment requirements are included where the coating specification calls for them. Qualification results and routine production inspection serve different purposes and are recorded accordingly.
Pipe and Coating Traceability
The shipment record links the pipe identification to its material documents and coating batch. Agreed thickness, continuity and repair records allow the receiving team to reconcile the coated joints with the purchase order.
Packing That Protects the Coating
Padded Supports and Restraints
Timber dunnage and padded contact points separate coated surfaces from hard supports and restraints. Lifting and unloading arrangements must avoid dragging pipe over the coating or bearing directly on unprotected edges.
Cutbacks and Open Bores
Bare cutbacks need temporary preservation compatible with later welding and field coating. End protection keeps transport debris out of internally coated pipe. Coating systems and order lines remain identifiable after protection is fitted.
Receiving and Coating Damage
The packing list records pipe size, coating system, pieces and lengths. Visible damage is checked against the agreed repair procedure before installation; coating repairs and exposed steel are distinguished from cosmetic handling marks.
Pipe, coating and freight in the offer
We itemize pipe supply, the specified coating work and packing in the quotation. Production timing covers material preparation and coating; ocean transit is a separate part of the delivery plan. Freight scope follows the named delivery term and destination.
Coated Pipe Ordering Questions
Can a coated pipe be cold-bent after delivery?
Cold bending needs a procedure covering the steel and coating at the required temperature and radius. The specified inspection follows bending; the coating system must be suitable for that operation.
Can one purchase include FBE and 3LPE pipe?
Yes. Separate order lines retain each pipe specification and coating system. We price the production batches separately, then plan packing so the two finishes and their documents remain distinguishable at receiving.
Can you match a coating brand named in the specification?
A named product is reviewed as part of the coating purchase. The offer identifies the proposed material; any alternative is listed separately for approval. Similar color or the same generic resin name does not establish equivalence.
What sets the minimum quantity and unit price?
Pipe size, wall, coating material and the production batch determine the quotation. Mixed sizes or systems can create separate setup quantities. We state the quantity basis for each line and distinguish pipe weight from finished coated weight when weight-based pricing is used.
Does epoxy coating make a pipe suitable for drinking water?
Suitability requires the specific coating product and finished system to meet the project’s potable-water requirements. Where NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification is required, its listing and use conditions must cover the proposed product. The word “epoxy” alone does not establish that approval.
Is cathodic protection still part of a coated pipeline design?
Yes, where required by the corrosion-control design. Coating and cathodic protection have complementary roles in a buried steel pipeline. Coated-pipe supply does not include the design or installation of the site’s cathodic-protection system unless separately contracted.
