Compare the manufacturer, painted product and supply route

The three sources below manufacture or coat steel for the North American market. Listed alphabetically, they provide different starting points for an inquiry. This comparison does not assign quality scores or assume stock, trial-coil availability or a delivery date. Product information was checked October 19, 2026.

Keep the producer and seller separate on the comparison sheet. A service center may sell slit coils from one of these sources; a distributor’s different name does not create a second independent steel or paint manufacturer. Confirm who makes the substrate, who coats it, who slits it and who accepts the finished-coil order.

Where the three prepainted coil offerings differ

Dofasco / Baycoat: named SMP and PVDF systems

Dofasco identifies Baycoat as its paint facility; Baycoat describes coating Dofasco and Stelco substrates in coil form. Perspectra Plus provides a named SMP specification rather than a resin label alone. Its August 2023 specification covers ASTM A653 galvanized and ASTM A792 55% aluminum-zinc bases, with the reverse-side film specified to the customer’s requirements. For architectural roof and wall finishes, the published 10,000 Series is a separate PVDF system. An offer should state which system is supplied, not substitute “prepainted steel” for that identity.

The Perspectra Plus specification also makes a useful forming distinction: its representative-sample adhesion test has an explicit exclusion for Grade 80 / Grade 550 steel. A buyer moving to full-hard material cannot carry that stated test requirement across unchanged. Ask for the proposed grade’s applicable forming evidence and run the actual panel profile; a laboratory paint test does not establish production speed or approve a finished corner.

Steel Dynamics: identify the producing and coating plant

Steel Dynamics makes steel and operates coil-coating lines within its finishing facilities. Butler’s product page identifies tension leveling and surface inspection on the Butler and Jeffersonville coating lines. Ask the seller to identify the proposed plant, paint system and delivery date for the required steel and finish combination.

Steelscape: choose the substrate, paint route and plant

Steelscape’s Service Offer Manual, July 2026 Rev. 12, separates its metallic-coating and painting capabilities. Its standard prepainted product is Spectrascape, using TruZinc galvanized or ZINCALUME substrates with several paint technologies. The manual also distinguishes finished painted-steel orders from toll processing. A buyer purchasing a complete coil needs an offer for the steel-plus-coating combination, not a paint-line capability or a toll-coating charge for customer-owned material.

A 54-inch wall-panel feed strip changes the inquiry shortlist

Consider a hypothetical U.S. wall-panel manufacturer whose fixed roll-forming profile needs a 54.00 in. developed feed strip. That is the strip width, not finished panel coverage. The order specifies ASTM A653 SS Grade 40, 0.024 in. base-metal thickness, G90 galvanizing, an SMP exterior finish and a defined backer for an ordinary inland location. G90 is the ASTM A653 zinc coating-weight designation for both sides together. The inquiry includes the color reference, width tolerance, edge condition and receiving-line coil limits.

For that unchanged brief, Dofasco/Baycoat and Steel Dynamics receive the first technical inquiries. Steelscape remains a conditional inquiry for a nonstandard painted width. This is a dimensional screen, followed by confirmation of the complete steel-and-paint combination; it is not approval of a supplier or a production coil.

Named inquiryWhy it proceeds—or needs an exceptionSpecific response needed
Dofasco / Baycoat — initial inquiry54 in. is below the published 60 in. coating-line maximum. No minimum or exact grade/gauge/paint combination is established by that statement.Confirm 54.00 in. at the specified tolerance, SS Grade 40 / 0.024 in. BMT / G90, the offered SMP system and backer, plus delivered coil ID, OD, weight and orientation.
Steel Dynamics — initial inquiry54 in. falls within the published Butler and Jeffersonville painted-width ranges. The offer must name the actual coating plant.Confirm that plant can supply the complete specified combination at 54.00 in.; identify the paint/primer/backer, width tolerance and delivered coil format. Do not treat the group-wide maximum as a plant commitment.
Steelscape — conditional nonstandard-width inquiry54 in. exceeds the manual’s normal painted maxima of 49.5 in. at Kalama and 52 in. at Rancho Cucamonga. The manual allows outside-range inquiries.Request written confirmation of a 54.00 in. painted combination and its supply route. Without it, the normal published ranges do not meet this fixed-profile brief.
A required 54-inch developed feed strip is compared with Dofasco Baycoat, Steel Dynamics and Steelscape painted-width information; slitting a 52-inch strip cannot make it wider.
Published coating widths compared with the hypothetical 54 in. strip requirement. The remaining material and coating specifications still need a matching offer.

Slitting cannot turn a 52 in. coil into the required 54 in. strip. Buying that narrower coil would require a different approved profile or tooling arrangement, so it is not an equivalent substitution. If the panel manufacturer later approves a narrower feed design, reopen the width screen with the new strip dimension.

Before a production release, each remaining source still has to confirm the exact product, usable coil geometry and actual commercial terms. Compare a trial quantity only after the supplier has agreed to provide it; a catalog entry does not promise a sample coil, minimum order or price.

Compare the offered painted coils at the panel line

Once a supplier confirms the combination, obtain one identifiable proposed construction: base steel and thickness basis, metallic coating, pretreatment, primer, topcoat and reverse-side coating. Record the producing and coating locations. If a service center slits the master coil, retain the parent-coil and coating-lot references on the slit-coil records. That connects a surface or forming issue to the material actually delivered.

Specify the exposed painted face and winding orientation before the coil is made or rewound. The line must feed the intended exterior surface through the tooling correctly. A suitable finish on the wrong side of the strip, or a coil delivered in the wrong orientation, creates a receiving and setup problem even when the steel grade and color are correct.

Use the proposed production construction in the panel trial. Check the finished profile for paint damage at bends, surface marking and springback, then check the joint and cut edges against the accepted panel requirements. Record any lubrication or protective-film arrangement used. A change in grade, coating construction or processing route needs review against that record, rather than acceptance because the replacement coil carries the same color name.

Frequently asked questions

Can a service center be the seller if the coil comes from one of these manufacturers?

Yes. Compare the actual supply route rather than requiring every order to be mill-direct. The offer should identify the steel producer and coil coater, the seller’s slitting or rewinding work, and the records retained from the master coil. Ask who handles a painted-surface or forming complaint. Two service centers offering coil from the same coater may provide different delivery formats without providing independent coating sources.

Is a toll-coating offer equivalent to buying finished prepainted steel coil?

No. A toll offer concerns processing material supplied under an agreed arrangement; a finished-coil offer includes the specified steel and coating package. Steelscape’s manual lists these as different services. Confirm who owns and supplies the incoming steel, who checks its suitability, and which party is responsible for the delivered painted coil before comparing prices.

Can another SMP coating replace a specified Perspectra Plus system?

Only through the buyer’s accepted substitution process. “SMP” identifies a resin family, not the complete named paint construction, color reference, backer or performance specification. Request the proposed alternative’s documents and material sample, then review them against the panel and project requirements. Do not relabel another SMP coating as Perspectra Plus.

Can a wider painted master coil be slit to the required panel feed?

Yes, if the supplier confirms the wider coil in the specified steel-and-paint combination. Agree who slits it, the finished strip width and tolerance, edge condition and delivered coil format. Retain the master-to-slit coil and coating-lot references. Compare the price and quantity on a clear basis, including trim and any processing minimum; gross master-coil tonnage is not the same as usable panel-feed tonnage. A published line width does not establish that the required master coil is available.

Can coils from different coating systems be mixed on one wall elevation?

Do not assume matching initial colors will weather alike. Dofasco’s Perspectra Plus specification recommends planning large, multi-order projects with the supplier and using one production lot where possible; it warns against mixing Perspectra Plus with other paint systems on the same building. For a supplier transition, agree how lots and panel areas will be allocated before material is released.

Does a published painted width mean the supplier will provide a trial coil?

No. Width capability and trial-order terms are separate questions. Request the trial construction, available quantity, coil format, price and delivery terms from the actual seller. Keep the trial coil identifiable so its forming and appearance results can be tied to a later production offer. None of the width statements in this comparison establishes a trial-coil policy.
