Welded round, square and rectangular HSS for wholesale structural orders
ASTM A500 Grade B and C HSS is available in square, rectangular and round welded sections. Compare selected dimension-and-wall pairs below, with the complete ranges on each shape page. Full lengths, cut pieces and prepared ends support workshop fabrication and project material orders.
Square and rectangular HSS provide flat faces for plates and connections; round HSS uses actual outside diameter and wall thickness. All three are supplied as structural tubing in the specified Grade B or C.

A500 specifies structural tubing. A pressure-piping application requires its own pipe material and service specification.
These entries come from our square, rectangular and round HSS catalogs. Metric sections and inch-based round sizes retain their original units. Wall options belong to the individual row.
For A500 HSS, AISC 360-22 section B4.2 uses a design wall of 0.93 times the specified nominal wall, as summarized by the Steel Tube Institute. That reduced value belongs to the engineering calculation. The purchase line still orders the specified nominal thickness; supplying a smaller nominal wall changes the selected material.

The full shape tables provide more dimension-and-wall combinations. Round HSS uses actual OD rather than nominal pipe size.
ASTM A500/A500M-23 uses these inch-pound minimum strengths for round, square and rectangular HSS. Round Grade C has used the 50 ksi minimum yield requirement since the 2021 revision, which matters when comparing older tables.

These are specified minimum material strengths. Shipment test results appear in the material records; member capacity also depends on dimensions, connections and structural design.
Bare or temporarily oiled HSS is available for workshop fabrication. The finish scope identifies weld areas and the surface condition needed for later cleaning or painting.
Painted and galvanized supply identifies whether the finish applies to full tube or fabricated members. Cuts, holes and welded attachments are coordinated with that sequence and the specified coating acceptance.
Repeated frame members can be supplied at finished length, with the specified tolerance, cut squareness and burr removal.
Bevels, holes and miters are located from the section’s reference faces. Rectangular sections also retain their orientation so the prepared ends fit the intended joint.
Flat section faces accommodate base plates, brackets and welded connections. Rectangular members have different depths about their two axes, so their orientation matters in the fabrication drawing.
Round HSS provides a circular profile for braces and other tubular members. Connecting it to a plate or another tube can require shaped ends or prepared weld faces; these follow the joint drawing.
Material records identify the supplied grade, chemistry and A500 conformance, linked to the shipment through the material and bundle marks.
Required tension results, dimensional reports and witness arrangements are agreed with the inspection scope.
Checks cover outside dimensions, nominal wall, length and section condition. Prepared pieces receive the additional checks needed for their cuts, holes or end features.
Specified Charpy V-notch or other toughness requirements are reviewed before order acceptance. They are additional material criteria, separate from the Grade B/C minimum-strength table.
Material can be priced by pieces or the specified weight basis. Cutting, end preparation, finish and freight have separate scope, allowing full-length and prepared-piece offers to be compared on the same basis.
Labels identify the section, wall, grade and piece count. Prepared parts carry their own part references and remain separate from full lengths.
Restrained bundles support long tube and protect prepared ends and finished surfaces. Packing lists connect each bundle to its material and part quantities.
Keep the original grade and standard edition with the drawing. We flag the legacy requirement for the project’s material review before pricing an accepted alternative. A B/C offer does not silently replace the specified Grade A material or revise the project notes.
A dual-grade order needs explicit confirmation that the supplied material meets both requirements, with both grades identified in the accepted records. We review that document requirement as part of the offer. A higher reported yield value or the appearance of the tube alone does not establish dual-grade conformance.
The M designation selects the SI requirements, and the standard’s unit systems are used independently. Identify the intended order basis before production. Any conversion of the drawing’s dimensions is resolved on the accepted material schedule; rounded conversions are not mixed with inch-pound requirements as if they were one specification.
